QnA with Raw Treats Expert Brea Millen

We're definitely a fan of our Raw Treats and some of our favourites are Brea's Raw Mixes - she does all the hard work for you finding the best ingredients and placing all the ingredients you need in an easy toteable jar - then all you have to do is blend and roll into balls - simple right!

We chat to Brea about her active life and how to make her delicious Peanut Butter Whoopie Pie (it's too delicious not to try)!

Tell us a bit about yourself – what inspired you to start Rawmix?

Rawmix came about when I worked a desk job and discovered the importance of an afternoon pick-me-up. There was a confectionery cupboard located just meters from my desk, stocked with products full of processed sugars and unpronounceable ingredients – cheap and convenient but lacking nutrients and longevity. So I began experimenting with blends of different nuts, seeds and fruit to create bliss balls. The flavour combinations were nutritious and delicious, but sourcing the ingredients was costly and troublesome, often requiring 3 or 4 pit stops to get everything I needed. And so Rawmix was born: an affordable, convenient, nourishing and transparent DIY mix for guilt-free raw treats.

What is your active life mantra?

Mix it up! Find a few different exercise routines that you enjoy, and do what feels right on that day.

Have you always been into health and fitness?

I played a lot of sport growing up – touch football, rowing, tennis, so I have always been conscious of what fuel I put in my body to keep the energy levels up. I don’t subscribe to diets or food movements – I love real, whole food in its natural, organic state.

What does your usual workout look like?

 I don’t have a gym membership, which forces me to get creative with physical activity. I like short bursts of high intensity exercise – I’m not much of a distance runner! During the week I do a mix of hill sprints, stair climbs and interval training in the park. On the weekends, I opt for one of the many stunning coastal paths that Sydney has to offer - Spit Bridge to Manly, and the Hermitage Foreshore Walk are two of my favourites.

Besides bliss balls, have you used your mixes to make any other raw creation?

Absolutely! The mixes are so versatile - I try new shapes and sizes every time I make them. My favourite creation at the moment is a peanut butter “whoopie pie” using the Hutchinson (choc-nut) mix. I flatten the mixture with a rolling pin, cut out cookies using a cookie cutter and sandwich a layer of peanut butter. The Crown (nut-free choc) mix is great pressed into a slice tin and sprinkled with coconut; and the Fitzroy (ginger) mix is delicious as bars rolled in sesame seeds.

What is your favourite mix?

I don’t play favourites! But if I must… I love a Bourke brekky bar in the morning and a Hutchinson peanut putty sambo in the afternoon. The Bourke mix is also the prettiest.

Where are your favourite places to get a healthy meal when you’re out?

The Nourishing Quarter for their Amaranth and Quinoa Noodle Salad with crispy tofu, Suzie Q Coffee & Records for a Breakfast at Epiphanie’s, Yullis for a Vietnamese Crepe, and About Life for a Nourishing Bowl. All Surry Hills locals!

What makes you FLAWSOME?

I quit a secure job in a company people were queuing to join, to start a small business. It seemed like a crazy and risky move, but one that my intuition told me was the right decision. When starting Rawmix, I found it easy to get lost in the minor details. But I’ve also found that if you focus on the big picture and take each day at a time, everything falls into place: “Leap and the net will appear”.
