MEET: #sweatprofessional: MICHELLE JANINE

Tell us a bit about yourself, how did you get into living a fit and healthy life?
My name is Michelle Janine, and I have always been an athlete. I am a professional dancer and fitness model and fitness instructor. I received my BFA in dance from The University of Arizona and graduated a year early. I started dancing at the age of three and shortly after, I started up in softball and later on, track. I have always been pretty competitive with dance and sports, but it's something that just happened naturally. I am, however, very supportive of others and absolutely love to see people achieve their goals and dreams. I love to be that person to help motivate them into reaching those goals. 

I guess too,  you could say I have always been fit and active, but I think in order to really be "fit and healthy" it starts to become more of a lifestyle.  When I was in college I realised that I couldn't just eat whatever I wanted anymore.  That is when I decided to start eating more of a healthier diet and got into weight training. It was the beginning of an amazing journey.

What is your definition of being healthy?   
Being "healthy" is making good decisions today that will alter you lifestyle and future for tomorrow.  Creating healthy choices to help you live happier and healthier life, without any type of regret.  Each decision reflects the other like a ripple effect. Once you make a habit of something, stick to it, and see the positive outcomes, why would you ever want to go back?

What's your active life mantra?
I have come up with my own, little title of what I like to do with inspiring words, actions, and healthy living. "The Meraki Movement." Meraki means to do something with creativity, soul and love. It's when you put something of yourself into what you do-- whatever that may be. Give it your all no matter what.. What's the point in just putting in half the effort, when there is so much of yourself to share with the world!? 

Besides dance and fitness, how else do you like to stay fit?
I absolutely love weight training! As well as HIIT. Women always believe that weight lifting will make them bulky or look too "manly." Not true, ladies! It's going to burn that extra fat and get you toned in all of the right places! Women don't produce enough testosterone to possibly look like men.. So let's get our sexy on!

What does a typical workout look like for you?
I always like to vary my workouts out to keep things fresh! Being on the same schedule everyday can get boring. Then the motivation and drive can lower because there is nothing new to look forward to doing. So for me, it depends on the day.. I'll usually target one or two different muscle groups with weight training, and sometimes follow it with HIIT on a cardio machine. I also love taking different classes such as spinning, dance classes and barre classes. Getting outside to hike is also another thing I love to do!

What (or who) keeps you motivated?
I am constantly thinking about the goals I want to reach and what sort of process I need to go through in order to reach them. I'm teaching myself to be patient and enjoy the journey I am taking in order to get there. It's an ongoing process; something that may not ever be fully reached, but that is because I'm always going for more and there's always more to chase after.

Can you share a quick workout with us?
Quick HIIT Workout you can do anywhere.. The more rounds repeat, the more you'll burn. You can always make time for what you want to make time for. Keep those goals in mind. 

Burn fat and calories, get one step closer to your goal, and rev up that metabolism!

Warm Up

  • 30 sec jumping jacks
  • 30 sec but kickers
  • 30 sec high knees
  • Repeat again for 3 min total warm-up
  • *1 min break.


  • 30 sec. walk out to plank w/ straight legs, walk back up
  • 30 sec. burpee-pushup with a jump at the top
  • **Repeat
  • *1 min break.


  • 30 sec. alternating front lunges
  • 30 sec. alternating jump lunges
  • **Repeat
  • *1 min. break.
  • 30 sec. Plank taps with a push-up after each tap
  • **Repeat
  • *1 min break
  • Cool down with some of your favorite stretches that focus on the hammies, hip flexors, calves and arms.
About a 15 minute workout.. I guarantee you'll be dripping sweat. So go all out and push hard!! You will have so much more time left in your day--no excuses!

What’s always in your gym bag?
Ipod/headphones, gloves, hair elastics, chapstick, a zip-up.. my water bottle never leaves my side.

It's coming up to the holiday season, what are your tips for staying active and healthy for the holidays?
It's okay to treat yourself, and enjoy the people and love around you. Life is all about balance. So have a few cookies, some wine, hot chocolate. Doing so is about moderation, and not over indulging too much. Just remember to get your butt back to work and know that you may need to push yourself just a smidge harder. It's okay to sneak in a little morning cardio when everyone else is sleeping. It will definitely boost your energy for the day!

What’s always in your fridge?
Avocado, meat, almond milk..all the goods!

Favourite healthy dish to cook? 
3 scrambled eggs with brown rice, avocado and hot sauce. Super fast, super easy, and super yummy! Can have it for any meal of the day! You've got a good source of protein, complex carbs, healthy fat and some hot sauce to speed up your metabolism!

What's in your favourite green smoothie?
Spinach, kale, peanut butter, banana, cinnamon, and a scoop of vanilla protein powder... You can't even taste the greens! Aside from that I love juices that include celery, beets, carrots.. I love it all!

What are your favourite healthy cafes or hangout spots?
I actually really enjoy "Fish Dish".. They're Cajun salmon and brown rice is amazing! Nektar Juice Bar makes great juices and acai bowls! I always love trying new places though!

What totally relaxes you?
An epsom salt- bubble bath and a glass of red wine. Good for the heart, and soul, right?!

What is your favourite thing to do on the weekend?
Get in a nice workout or create a new plyo or HIIT to do. Hike with my pup, spend some time with friends.

What’s your style like when you’re not working out?
I guess my style is a little mixed.. I love a little edge to my look. Sometimes all black with a leather jacket and booties, or I like to get dressed up with a nice pair of heels and something fancy. It all depends on the occasion. I guess I'm "urban-edgy?" I really just like living in my leggings and sneakers though!
