Cat is one of our favourite UK based #fitspos always inspiring us with gorgeous workout shots, healthy meals and more on her instagram account @catmeffan. We shared a virtual green smoothie whilst discussing all things fit and healthy - from what she eats do to day, to her favourite workout spots!
1. Tell us a bit about yourself? how did you get into health and fitness?
I’m a health & fitness blogger and jewellery designer from the UK, with a passion for being bendy and spending most of my time upside down! I grew up doing gymnastics and ballet and then when I went to secondary school, P.E. was pretty much the only reason I attended. Fitness has been part of my life for as long as I remember - I love that rush of endorphins I get after a workout and I love challenging my body to move in new ways. That’s why yoga is such a big part of my fitness, because I can lend my gymnastics and dance skills to it and constantly learn new ways to work my mind and body.
2. What is your active life mantra?
“You can’t rush something you want to last forever” - I’ve written this so many times and it never gets boring. It was the quote that really changed my mindset years ago, making me realise that wellbeing as a whole is a lifestyle meant to last forever, not a fad diet or fitness plan.
3. What does a usual workout look like for you?
At the moment I’m actually loving the Kayla Itsines workouts, as they are pretty full-on in the sweat department and are over within 30 minutes! I often switch the exercises with my own to mix it up a bit… and usually make it harder for myself, which I then regret when I can’t breath! ;) I also try to run twice a week and I’m a huge yoga lover, as you’ll see from my Instagram!
4. How do you recover after a tough workout?
Other than lie on the floor in a sweaty heap, breathing deeply, I rehydrate with a pint of water and refuel with a healthy snack. Either some homemade granola with almond milk or some mashed avocado on a slice of rye toast.
5. Diet and Exercise go hand in hand, what does a usual day on a plate look like for you?
Breakfast: Warm lemon water and a homemade green smoothie
Mid-Morning snack: Homemade granola with almond milk or some fruit
Lunch: Eggs and avocado on rye toast
Afternoon snack: Raw carrot with hummus
Dinner: Quinoa with roasted butternut squash, feta, vegetables and tzatziki
6. What's the best fitness advice you have ever been given?
I’m not sure if it’s advice as such, more just words of wisdom, but my mantra in the earlier question is the best thing someone said to me, as it really hit home and it’s now something I constantly think of.
My little bit of advice to everyone is ENJOY IT! Enjoy the exercise you do and the foods you eat, that way it becomes a happy lifestyle, rather than a fad or a chore. There are so many types of exercise out there, sometimes you just need to spend a little time going to class to class, figuring what’s right for you.
7. What are your favourite workout studios/trainers where you live?
In my home town of Stamford, there’s a pretty awesome place called Rhino’s Gymnasium - think monkey bars, olympic rings, tyre-flipping and an outside section where you can deadlift a Land Rover! When I’m in London, I love Paola’s Body Barre - that lady knows how to target muscles I didn’t even know existed!
8. Where are your favourite healthy hangouts?
I love juices from Roots & Bulbs in Marylebone and breakfast from The Riding House Cafe - they know how to poach the perfect eggs!
9. What will we find in your gym bag?
I’m usually rushing from place to place and don’t get time to prepare my gym bag properly, but sometimes you’ll find a couple of different outfits in case I fancy an impromptu photoshoot in the gym studio, after my workout! ;)
10. And Finally, What makes you FLAWSOME? At Vie Active we want to celebrate the notion of women being imperfectly perfect - flawsome
I love this! Especially as my blog is called Imperfect Matter, which was named for a similar reason. I’m all about wanting to inspire people to accept themselves, flaws and all. I think my goofy laugh and the occasional snort whilst laughing makes me flawsome! I used to try and laugh quietly because of it, but now I embrace it, because what’s better than the feeling of real, deep laughter?!
