Libby Babet - What makes me FLAWSOME
Posted on 16 March 2015
Our Ambassador and founder of Bottoms Up Fitness, Agoga and Chief Bar Libby Babet speaks about her FlAWSOME journey as we celebrate what makes us all FLAWSOME.
What makes you FLAWSOME?
I’m a personal trainer but I also run a handful of businesses and am still a freelance journalist too, which means my own workout schedule and life balance isn’t always ideal. I really have to plan my workouts and social time and often feel guilty that I haven’t had enough time to spend with my closest friends and family.
What is one of the hardest obstacles you’ve had to overcome and how did you overcome it?
When you first start a business, you are always struggling to ‘keep on top of things’. It’s taken me a long while to realise that in this crazy world of doing your own thing, you’ll probably never feel on top of things, and that’s ok, so long as you’re honestly doing your best.
What has been your great success?
Seeing the staff I’ve mentored start to spread their wings and become legendary intrapreneurs in their own right, creating lives for themselves that are so exciting and full of hope, while also staying by my side. I just love our little team and the trust and loyalty we share.
What is your greatest fear?
I like to think of fear as False Evidence Appearing Real – that way it doesn’t hold any power over me. With business and life, I like to live in the moment, without any worries about what ‘might’ lie ahead. That said, I am so ridiculously in love with and in awe of my husband, I do have a teeny fear that if he ever left the world before me, I’d be a lost little soul! I think that’s a fair enough one though ;)
What do you still want to accomplish?
SO MANY THINGS! I’m a serial business starter, I fall in love with peoples’ dreams so quickly and love diving straight in the deep to see if I can help make them a reality. I love hope and I love progress, I think that will always be part of me! We’ve recently launched online training site www.bufgirl.com with two programs – Body and Bride. I have huge plans for the BUF Girl project and next up (with any luck!) is a BUF Girl Studio. We also have big plans to expand the Agoga brand in 2016 and are close to launching our first food product, CHIEF Bar, which I’d love to see go all around the world! We’ll see ;)
Who is your ‘FLAWSOME’ inspiration?
My littlest sister, Julia. She was born with a club foot, which is a big deal and means she has struggled with multiple operations and structural issues for all of her life. Regardless of this, she has done everything she can to live an incredibly active lifestyle, stay fit, follow her dreams, kick body image issues to the curb and inspire other women. When Julia was younger she felt innately flawed and let that feeling influence her life, but now she has overcome her fears of imperfection to inspire others through her blog www.becomingjuliet.com and has volunteered, in person, to help out other women in need and even inspired them get fit! I think that’s the definition of Flawsome.
How has living an active life empowered you and made you who you are today?
Movement of any kind is joy and freedom for me. I feel happiest when I’m walking in nature, hitting the gym, or out in the surf. I honestly believe it’s the most empowering thing to be able to escape your desk and your regular life to spend time just with your body and your breath. Developing my love of active living into a career was the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. It meant getting out of the corporate life, which never suited my personality, and into a whole new world of business and striving and sweating and LIVING! I’m surrounded by amazing, positive, I’m inspired to try new and wonderful things every week and that has given life a beautiful momentum and power that I probably wouldn’t have found anywhere else.
