A guide to the new fitness words, phrases and acronyms you need to know.

TRX: “TRX” stands for “Total Body Resistance Exercise.” Using a single piece of equipment made from two nylon straps suspended from the ceiling, TRX leverages gravity and bodyweight to perform hundreds of strength-training exercises, from push-ups to planks. Moisture-Wicking: Gone are the days of breaking a sweat in a cotton t-shirt or singlet. Workout gear made from high-tech fabrics now allow you to stay cooler and dyer for longer by drawing (or wicking) sweat away from the body. One to note is merino wool. It is temperature regulating and moisture wicking. Our light-weight merino tanks provide extra breathability in the areas where we sweat most. Barre: (Pronounced: Bar) Think ballet barre. The latest fitness craze to sweep Australia is strength and toning classes inspired by a fusion of ballet, yoga and Pilates. From Barre 3 to Xtend Barre and Barre Body, it won’t be long until there’s a barre studio pulsing in every town.

Megaformer: The bigger, badder brother of a Pilates reformer, the megaformer is an apparatus used in toning classes such as Sydney’s Physicore and NY/LA favourite, SLT. The carriage of the machine moves back and forth on changeable resistance springs, requiring lots of core strength for stability.

Sports Band: From the Fitbit to the Jawbone Up and Nike FuelBand (available overseas), the latest generation of super-charged pedometers track more than just steps- they calculate every move to give you precise feedback on how active you really are. Strap on a band and get moving. 

HIIT: High Intensity Interval Training is an exercise method that consists of short bursts of excursion followed by a shorter recovery period.  A common formula involves a 2:1 ratio such as 30–40 seconds of fast sprinting followed by 15–20 seconds of jogging or walking. Studies show HIIT increases endurance and can raise the resting metabolic rate.

WOD: The foundation of CrossFit, WOD stands for Workout of the Day. This is the pre-determined set of exercises CrossFitters will complete that day and is meant to be a total body workout. An particularly tough example of a WOD?  The "Murph" completed as quickly as possible: 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 Squats, 1 mile Run.
